Tuesday 3rd November 2015 - 1-2pm, Room 4391a, JCMB
It feels like the semester started yesterday but we're already half way through! As a scientist, keeping up a field/lab notebook is an essential skill to have. We're going to talk about how to maintain a good lab book you will be able to go back to in some years' time and still be able to replicate your experiments. We're also going to look at some good examples of academic writing and some bad ones. Being concise in your writing is also crucial so if we're going to play a game of descriptions that will make you literally think on your feet! Hope to see you on Tuesday at 13:00 in room 4391a in JCMB.
Tuesday 19th October 2015 - 1-2pm, Room 4391a, JCMB
With the ODL first assignment submission deadline approaching, we're going to talk about essay writing in our next session. We're going to discuss how to search for primary sources, how to correctly reference and also about the general structure of an academic essay. Also, if we have time, we can talk about the field visits to the Royal Botanic Garden and you may ask any questions that are on your mind. Hope to see you there!
Wednesday 7th October 2015 - 1-2pm, Room 5 Crew Annex
It's week three and time for our first EcoPALS meeting of the semester. We are going to talk about course choices, pre-requisites and where are you hoping your degree will get you. An essential skill for any university student is effective note-taking, so we're going to discuss different strategies and also do a quick exercise including a short video, followed by discussion. If we have enough time we might talk about keeping a lab and field notebooks. All you need to bring along is yourself and any questions you have on your mind. Hope to see you all at 1 pm on Wednesday at the Crew Annex, Room 5!
